About Community RX Help

With the cash prices of prescription medication soaring, many people are struggling to be able to afford their medications, put food on the table, and still pay rent.  The higher costs of electricity and gas has compounded the problem making it even harder to make ends meet. Many of these hard working people shouldn't have to choose between paying rent and medications, but unfortunately they do. Then there are individuals who no longer can work due to their condition, they have applied for disability and are awaiting a determination. In the meantime, they do without their medication and suffer. That is why Community RX came into being.

Since 2001, we have been helping people obtain their medications. One of the ways we do that is we help our patients apply to the patient assistance programs offered by the pharmaceutical companies. This time consuming and complicated process is often difficult for the average person and a real struggle if you are ill. Another way we can help is by providing emergency funds for immediate needs. Community RX Help employs only two part-time employees in order to keep overhead costs low. We work closely with doctors and other health practitioners to make sure low to middle income patients who are uninsured get the life saving medications they need, without having to sacrifice other needs, such as food or lodging.

   History of Organization

Established in 2001
During the Spring of 2001, Roger Akers gave one of his graduate classes a research assignment to find out if there was any prescription assistance available for low-income people.  This project resulted in the creation of the prescription assistance program known as Community RX Help.  He gathered together a group of concerned citizens, including the hospital administrators for Medical Center and Memorial Hospital, to form a board of directors.  During this time period, the program was funded by a personal loan and many donations from the community, it was then that a program director was hired.  In October 2001, Community RX Help was recognized as a 501(c)3, tax exempt organization, recognized by the Internal Revenue Service.  After non-profit status was obtained, Community RX Help was eligible to apply for United Way funds and has been receiving support from United Way since 2002-2003.  At this time, the service area included Nacogdoches, Shelby and San Augustine counties. A person had to live in, or have a doctor, in one of these counties to be eligible for our services.
